Littleton Chiropractor Alternative Physical Medicine would like the share the results of several recent news stories and their take on chiropractic care. The National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine released the results of a study from July 2009 which was entitled "Costs of Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Frequency of Visits to CAM Practitioners". While chiropractic care was included in this study, chiropractic care is now actually more accepted as traditional medical care by patients, medical professionals and insurance companies. In fact, many MDs who practice traditional medical healthcare will suggest chiropractic services to patients who do not seem to respond to their treatment or who may prefer to go with a more natural approach to their healthcare and therapy. Many people prefer to go with a less invasive approach to healthcare or may not want to deal with the complications of prescription drugs or surgery. This is especially true when dealing with injuries or chronic pain issues such as migraines or when dealing with their back, neck, spine, muscles and tendons. The study concerns the costs of CAM care that is paid out of pocket by consumers and patients. In the year 2007 alone, Americans spent over 33.9 billion to pay for out of pocket expenses for CAM medical services and CAM products. $22 billion of that amount went to pay for CAM classes and/or materials, while the other 11.9 billion went towards paying for appointments/visits to CAM practitioners (which included visits to chiropractors). In comparison, $49.6

billion was for out of pocket expenses for medical doctor visits and care. In the study, chiropractic care (and osteopathic manipulation care) were noted to be some of the more affordable forms of CAM, while they noted that the highest cost per person were therapies such a chelation and naturopathy. In the greater scheme of things in the healthcare world, "Complementary and Alternative Medicine" (CAM) is noted for providing services to a greater number of patients for less money than traditional medical care and therapies would charge. Simply put, this means that MORE people are being treated for LESS money which is a wonderful testament to the care that CAM practitioners provide, and the trust that CAM patients have in their CAM care providers.
